Will India ever host the Olympics?

  • Can India host the Olympics?

Yes, India can host the Olympics. We were able to host the Commonwealth games of 2010. The games concluded with few hiccups. The stadiums didn't collapse, the security was spot on and the opening and closing ceremony were electrifying. Although the accomodation was an issue, it was resolved within no time.

India has the resources as well as the infrastructure to host the Olympics. In fact, with the inauguration of the Sardar Patel sports complex in Ahmedabad, it's pretty much viable.

  • Should India host the Olympics?

In the next 10–15 years? No.

Granted India managed the CWG games pretty well, hosting the Olympics will take a serious toll on the government's pocket. The budget for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics has been pegged at around $22 billion. This will only increase over time.

Historically, the games have proven to be more of a liability than an asset. Incomes of the game barely cover the expenses. The tax payers have to bear the brunt of such losses.

  • Will India host the Olympics in the coming future?

Highly likely. The Sardar Patel sports complex is being developed with the intention of hosting the future edition of the Olympics.

India had targeted the 2032 Olympics but were eliminated from the bidding race.

The authorities are now eyeing the 2048 Olympics.

Right now, hosting the Olympics seems like a far-fetched dream but if the Central and State governments work in tandem and continue their efforts, we will host the games in the near future.
